Overview
P2S was contracted to analyze several buildings on the University of California, Irvine campus to determine potential energy conservation measures. Once measures were identified, we provided calculations to estimate how much energy could be saved annually by implementing the measures. Our goal was to save ten million kilowatt hours (kWh) annually from the different measures. We also had to determine the cost of implementing each measure to identify which measures were most economically viable.
Challenge
The key challenge was to determine on a building-by-building basis just which energy conservation measures (ECM) would be most economical to implement. This required extensive field investigations to identify most likely energy conservation measures. We then had to calculate projected energy savings and determine implementation costs for the ECMs. Finally, we needed to determine which ECM’s would be recommended for implementation and complete the installation before year-end.
Action
First, we surveyed several buildings to determine existing conditions. With several campus buildings, this required a good-sized team to perform detailed site surveys. Once conditions were verified, we evaluated existing mechanical systems to determine energy saving potential.
On a building-by-building basis, we identified specific energy conservation measures and produced detailed calculations quantifying potential energy savings. For some buildings, energy savings were obtained by modeling with eQuest™, while others were calculated using detailed spreadsheets.
Finally, we narrowed down the list of specific energy conservation measures to the most economically viable. We then produced comprehensive drawings for contractor bidding. Once construction and installation costs were confirmed, we revised the list of viable measures, gained consensus with our client and began construction. At the same time, we turned in incentive applications to the utility company and a third-party reviewer to receive energy saving rebates which helped offset construction costs.
Construction took about four months. The third-party reviewer inspected the installation and monitored the energy savings for verification. After installation was completed, we provided comprehensive as-builts for the owner.
Results
Energy savings continue to be monitored. The final results will be published YE 2010. To date, the client is pleased with the preliminary results. The study and design portion of the project was completed in the short time schedule. The project is on target to save the university about 5,000,000 kWh annually. The experience from implementing this series of energy conservation measures and the results to date has prompted the university to plan for additional studies and ECM projects for 2010 and 2011.
