Overview
P2S was selected to provide mechanical and plumbing engineering services for a new 34,000 square-foot student center and an 8,500 square-foot bookstore at Cypress College. The student center includes college administrative offices, registration, conference rooms, kitchen and dining spaces. The bookstore includes student bookstore, printing, shipping and receiving and support offices.
Challenge
P2S was tasked with designing the mechanical and plumbing systems for these two multifunctional buildings. In the student center building, one of our challenges was to design systems that would serve kitchen and dining functions while not cross-contaminating the system serving administrative functions. In the bookstore, we were faced with the challenge of designing an HVAC system that served both the traditional retail space and high-exhaust printing functions.
Action
P2S provided engineering, design and construction support services. For the mechanical system, P2S utilized only chilled water-cooling and roof-mounted air-handling units. For the kitchen, a 100% make-up air system and grease exhaust fans provided direct connection to grease hoods.
P2S utilized a variable air volume system to supply air and return air through an open plenum. This design provided savings in energy and operational costs by modulating airflow as required by the space. The buildings control system is designed to mix air in variable air volume boxes, which contain hot water heating coils, based on room temperature sensor readings.
For the plumbing system, P2S designed an exterior grease interceptor system for collection of kitchen grease waste. It also included systems for building sewer, waste and vent, domestic cold and hot water, storm drain and natural gas.
P2S provided planning, coordination among disciplines and timely response to submittals and requests for information/issues during construction.
Results
P2S completed the design on schedule and within the allocated budget. By meeting project goals and objectives, Cypress College benefits from lower operational and maintenance costs and enables them to use the facility as planned.
