Overview
Boeing contracted P2S as the prime consultant for the design of more than 32,000 square-feet of electronic and hardware test labs in an existing building and the in a new annex building at Boeing’s campus in Huntington Beach, California. P2S provided architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and structural engineering services. Project scope included the design of clean room environments, shielded rooms, a UPS system, large isolated foundations and extensive pit structure for installation of Scorsby equipment.
Challenge
P2S was challenged first by the relocation of existing labs from a different Boeing facility to Huntington Beach. Because there were no existing design drawings for the labs to be relocated, P2S had to perform extensive field surveys in order to establish facility requirements for the lab equipment to be relocated. Plus, to comply with vibration requirements, P2S had to design an extensive pit structure and numerous isolated pad foundations.
Also, the new test labs would share utilities with existing labs in the building. So it was essential to design a plan that minimized impact on lab operations, keeping them functional during construction. P2S was also challenged with a limited construction timeline of only eight months.
The goals and objectives of the project included providing flexibility and ease of use for the various systems in the labs, maximizing efficiency of the systems, minimizing environmental impact and completing the project within its tight budget and timeline.
Action
As prime consultant on this project, P2S subcontracted and managed all the necessary architectural and structural engineering services and provided engineering, design and construction administration of the entire project. To meet the objectives of the project, P2S designed the following systems:
Mechanical system
- Custom VAV air handling units, duct mounted reheat coils and sound attenuation
- Lab HVAC design included minimum air turbulence and draft in the room. Supply air was designed low velocity ceiling diffusers and return air was removed using return air walls
- Chilled water and heating hot water was supplied to the building from the existing central plant.
- Controls included building management DDC and laboratory temperature and pressurization control
Electrical system
- Design of a new outdoor substation, 300KW UPS system, 400HZ power distribution system and electrical controls for Scorsby pits
- Each lab was fitted with dedicated panelboards to meet the power demands of individual labs
- Energy efficient lighting was provided with occupancy sensors and multi-level switches control for most light fixtures
- Public address system for each lab, ground system for each lab
Plumbing system
- Design of vacuum system
- Lab plumbing systems include vacuum, compressed air, industrial hot and cold water, gas, and laboratory waste
Results
Boeing’s new electronic and hardware test labs are 15% more efficient than before. Plus, even with the tight timeline, P2S completed this project on schedule and within the allocated budget. By meeting project goals and objectives, the renovated laboratories enable Boeing and its teams to utilize the facility as planned—and with increased flexibility.
