Office of Federal High-Performance Green Buildings Appoints Kent Peterson to Advisory Committee

Kent Peterson, chief engineer and principal of Long Beach-based P2S Engineering has been appointed to the Federal Green Building Advisory Committee (GBAC). Serving under the GSA’s Office of Federal High-Performance Green Buildings, established by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA), Peterson will serve as a representative of the engineering profession.

With a focus on both the economic and environmental impact of high-performance green building design and standards, the committee will make recommendations and consult with the Office of Federal High-Performance Green Buildings and review existing research and plan additional research to evaluate:

  • Health, comfort, and performance of occupants
  • Green building measurement tools
  • Emerging technologies for green buildings
  • Green buildings benefits relating to security, natural disaster and emergency needs
  • Indoor air quality

Peterson is one of the few nonfederal members to serve on the committee, which will coordinate high-performance green building information and activities with several Federal agencies including the Environmental Protection Agency, the Office of the Federal Environmental Executive, the Department of Energy, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Defense and others. “I’m honored with this appointment and look forward to continuing to promote, bring awareness and identify better standards for high-performance green buildings,” said Peterson.

Peterson was appointed by the Director of the Office of Federal High-Performance Green Buildings, Kevin Kampschroer. “We as a society spend 90 percent of our time indoors, but 30 percent of buildings, including schools, hospitals and homes have poor indoor quality,” Kampschroer said. “It’s not just the energy use that is important but also the health and well-being of people who spend time in the buildings.

The Office of Federal High-Performance Green Buildings serves under the GSA which is responsible for almost 430,000 buildings totaling 3.34 billion square feet. The agency is pioneering green building for the federal government, committed to building to LEED™ Gold standards. Beyond LEED, the committee and the agency are examining how and when people use space and adapting design to create workspace that is efficient and pleasant.
